Devotional Guide

In the two weeks leading up to our Grace Offering we're going to immerse ourselves in grace. That's not to say that we will sin more so that grace may abound (Paul argued against that in Romans 6), but we want to soak up what God has done for us. For it is only when we truly appreciate what God has done for us that grace will flow through us.

For each day from March 23 - April 5 we'll take a look at a Scripture that teaches us something about grace. As I was putting all these verses together I was surprised to see that grace is more often used to express the change that takes place in our life rather than just the forgiveness we experience. Both are important concepts in understanding grace, but I tend to believe we have emphasized the forgiveness aspect far more than the transforming aspect.

Each day read the Scripture (you may want to go a little deeper and read the verses before and after as well), read the brief thought, and then use the prayer to bring your thoughts before our Father.

So join us as we delve into this amazing grace!

SUNDAY, MARCH 29, DAY SEVEN - THE GRACE TO SHARE

Today's Scripture:
Acts 4:32–35
All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had. With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all.  There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone as he had need.

Today's Thought:
The central message of the sermons in the book of Acts was the resurrection of Jesus.  That event transformed the apostles from scared and confused to bold and confident.  The resurrection also inspired people to view their possessions in a new light.  In view of God's grace, believers were inspired to become giving people as well.

They seemed to be overwhelmed by God's generosity that they became generous.  That's what happens when we truly become people of gratitude.  Blessed people bless people.  How blessed we are to be recipients of God's powerful grace.  Doesn’t it just make sense that we, as recipients of God's goodness, would use our resources to bless others?

Grace creates a culture of generosity and charity.  Perhaps a good test of our understanding of grace is to consider how willing we are to use our resources to the benefit of others.  After all, that is what God has done.  He loved us so much that he gave his most precious Son.    God's very nature is to give.

May the resurrection of Jesus revive within us a spirit of generosity to the world around us!

Today's Prayer:
God, we are in awe of your great power demonstrated in the resurrection of your son Jesus.   As the resurrection created a bold and dedicated spirit within your disciples may it likewise create within us a renewed desire to serve you and others with all that we have.   Thank you for the new life you give to each one of us who call you Lord.  In the name of the resurrected Savior we pray.  Amen.
